I am extremely excited to be part of the Urban Zen program at UCLA. For a long time I have been putting off the practice of Yoga. I guess I felt scared and unconfident in my ability to succeed at something so physically demanding. Let’s face it, no one likes stretching. However I knew that in order for me to truly embody a healthy lifestyle, I would soon have to adopt this ancient practice. UCLA teamed up with the Urban Zen program founded by fashion designer Donna Karan, and the opportunity was right in front of me. I signed up to become part of the program and began a 120 hour training module.

The aim of the program is to implement eastern medicinal practices and integrate them with western medicine to cure the “whole” person. I cannot stress how groundbreaking this is for healthcare and how it is finally moving in the right direction. There is so much that can be prevented and cured without having to use the aid of chemicals, and pharmaceutical drugs. If there is another alternative… why not?

One of the things that I am most particularly excited about is that we are being taught by the very famous yoga teacher Rodney Yee. He is one of the masters of new age yoga, and he has an army of devoted followers that would kill to be in the same room as him.

During my first day I was simply taken back by how amazing these modalities are and the effect that they have on our bodies. It is not only a physical journey but a spiritual one. When I say spiritual I am not referring to religion but instead I am speaking about our soul. It makes you feel good inside, and you are mentally cleared of the everyday stress of modern life.

True wisdom does not flourish from success, but instead it emerges from the journey in which we embark to succeed.
